How Sprinting Improves
Heart Function
Among the many unique benefits that sprint training offers...

A stronger healthier heart is one that you rarely hear mentioned...

Most likely because, the specific benefits of a strong heart...

Are not entirely obvious to anyone with those but an extremely weak heart.

Which is unfortunate because these benefits are hell of a lot more interesting once you hear what they are.

So in this post that's exactly what we'll cover. First up...

How the Heart Ages

Very similar to how the lungs age...

When the heart ages, it gradually loses its ability to pump powerfully, and fast…

At times when it needs to.

This not only makes it less efficient during exercise, it make it less efficient at rest as well.

Generally speaking, an unhealthy heart will have a higher RESTING heart rate, than a healthy one.

Since it pumps less efficiently, it needs to beat more frequently to deliver the same amount of oxygen...

Compared to a healthier heart that can do the same work in fewer beats.

And it's that simple. Now up next...

The Unique Benefits of Sprinting on the Heart

Just as you'd expect, the only way to keep your heart strong through exercise...

Is to push it to its limits on a regular basis.

However the problem with almost all forms of exercise...

Including the gym, and many field sports is...

While they do require the heart to work much harder than at rest...

They rarely, if ever, require it to beat at its absolute maximum level.

Sprinting however, is one of the only exercises there is...

Which requires you to be at or near your maximum heart rate with every single attempt.

And by maxing out your heart rate this regularly...

Not only do you keep your max heart rate higher...

You keep your resting heart rate lower as well.

These two numbers compared are known commonly as...

Heart Rate Variability (HRV)

HRV is defined as the maximum variation in time between one heart beat and the next.

The speed it beats at any given moment is controlled by your Autonomic Nervous System…

Which is primarily response for the fight or flight response of your body, in response to stressful situations.

As studies have conclusively shown...

People who regularly engage in high intensity exercises such as sprinting have a much higher HRV than those who don’t.

And those who have a high HRV have a much better stress response to tough situations...

Have more control over their emotions, and make better decisions under difficult circumstances.

So not only does sprinting keep your body healthy, it keeps your mind healthy as well.

Which is a benefit that we could certainly all use more of in our daily lives.
